Whenever possible, buy used books and resell your books after you are done.
My son found instead of buying what is recommended, go to class first and find out what the teacher recommends so you don't buy unneeded books.
However, on campus there is a limited supply of used books. We recently found that buying books on Amazon saved hundreds of dollars. They give you many purchase options and with the money you save you still are ahead if you opt for expedited shipping.
