This a typical staircase, what my clients that have this complain about is marks on the white parts from shoes and going up and down.
Solution:
Paint those a brown that compliments the wood, cover with a dark colored carpet runner or have the same wood applied there.
I Love this look, but if you have kids and pets the color is not practical.
This is a great example of using a dark carpet runner. Stylish and functional!
